My Next Step in Healing – Starting EMDR Therapy 💫

Hey Y'all, What's Great!

I wanted to share something personal with you — next week I’ll be starting EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with my therapist due to dealing with bipolar/schizoaffective issues stress, emotional trauma, life, past relationships, and other issues.
EMDR is a powerful tool that helps people heal from trauma by reprocessing painful memories through guided eye movements or tapping. The goal isn’t to erase the past, but to release the heavy emotional weight that comes with it.
Finding the Right Energy in a Therapist
Starting therapy isn’t always easy, especially when you’ve lived with mental illness for decades. But for the first time, I feel like I’ve found the right match. My new therapist has an energy that feels safe, grounding, and uplifting. It’s hard to explain, but sometimes you just know when you’ve found the right person to walk with you through a healing journey.
For me, this feels like the perfect connection for starting EMDR therapy. The trust and energy between us make me believe I can finally face some of the hardest parts of my past. I don’t want to share too many personal details about her, but what I can say is that the way she shows up — calm, understanding, and present — makes me feel ready to begin this process with hope instead of fear.
This is a big step for me, and I’m hopeful it will bring real healing from the trauma, anger, and toxicity I’ve carried for so long.
I’ll be blogging about my experience and sharing updates along the way. If you’re curious about EMDR or just want to follow my journey, stay tuned — I’ll be posting more very soon.
Living With Intense Emotions and Anxiety
One of the biggest parts of my healing journey is learning how to deal with my emotions. For me, they aren’t just “normal” feelings — they’re very intense, often hitting me harder than I expect. When I feel sadness, food addiction, anger, or even stress, it can feel overwhelming, like my whole body is carrying the weight of it.
On top of that, I live with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). That means I worry about things constantly — sometimes even small things most people wouldn’t think twice about. My mind often jumps to the worst-case scenario, and I find myself stuck in cycles of “what ifs.”
This constant worry and intensity has definitely affected my mental health. It can leave me feeling drained, restless, and even physically tense. Anxiety doesn’t just live in your head — it shows up in your body too. For me, that looks like tight muscles, trouble sleeping, and always feeling like I’m “on edge.”
That’s why therapy is such an important part of my journey. I want to learn new ways to cope, calm my body down, and finally release some of the emotional weight I’ve been carrying for years. EMDR therapy is the next step I’m hopeful about, because it’s not just about talking — it’s about actually helping my brain and body process the trauma and anxiety that fuel these intense emotions.
If you’re struggling with your own mental health, I want you to know — you are not alone. Healing is not easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight, but every step you take matters.
As I begin my own journey with EMDR therapy, my hope is that my story will encourage others in the Black community to start their healing journeys too. We have carried trauma for too long — and it’s time we give ourselves permission to let go, seek help, and build healthier futures.
Together, we can face the wounds left by racism, oppression, and generational pain. And together, we can create solutions that lift us up instead of tearing us down.
