Stop Calling It Selfish Finally Choosing Me Being Single Isn't the Problem—People Hate UR Boundaries

Have you ever noticed that some people call you selfish the moment you start putting yourself first?
I've been thinking about this lately, and I've realized that being single isn't always what makes people uncomfortable. Sometimes it's the boundaries that come with it.
When you're constantly available, always saying yes, and putting everyone else's needs before your own, people tend to be comfortable with that version of you. But the moment you start protecting your peace, prioritizing your mental health, and focusing on your own goals, some people suddenly have a problem.

I've learned that choosing yourself isn't selfish. It's self-respect.
For many years, a lot of us were taught to put other people's feelings, expectations, and needs ahead of our own. We were praised for being accommodating, helpful, and available. While there's nothing wrong with caring about others, there comes a point where constantly giving can leave you feeling drained, overlooked, and disconnected from yourself.
Being single has taught me a lot about independence and self-worth. It has given me the opportunity to focus on my healing, personal growth, goals, and happiness without feeling pressured to meet someone else's expectations. It has also helped me recognize the importance of healthy boundaries.
One thing I've noticed is that people who benefited from my lack of boundaries were often the first to complain when I started creating them. Suddenly, saying "no" became a problem. Taking time for myself became selfish. Protecting my energy became an issue.
The truth is, boundaries are not punishment. They are protection.
Healthy boundaries allow us to maintain our peace, protect our mental and emotional well-being, and create healthier relationships. The people who truly care about you will respect your boundaries, even if they don't always understand them.
Being single doesn't mean you're lonely. It doesn't mean you're broken. It doesn't mean you're waiting for your life to begin. Sometimes being single is one of the most empowering seasons of your life because it gives you the space to learn who you are, what you value, and what you will no longer tolerate.
The more I've grown, the more I've realized that choosing myself isn't something I need to apologize for. My healing matters. My peace matters. My goals matter. And yours do too.
So if someone calls you selfish because you've started setting boundaries, ask yourself this question: Are they upset because you're doing something wrong, or are they upset because they no longer have unlimited access to your time, energy, and attention?
There is a difference.
At the end of the day, protecting your peace is not selfish. Knowing your worth is not selfish. Putting yourself first when necessary is not selfish.
It's called self-respect.
